An Audience With the Pope

A man who is an avid golfer finally gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance for an audience with the Pope. After standing in line for hours, he gets to the Pope and says, "Holiness, I have a question that only you can answer. You see, I love golf, and I feel a real need to know if there is a golf course in heaven. Can you tell me if there is?"

The Pope considers for a moment, and says, "I do not know the answer to your question, my son, but I will talk to God and get back to you."The next day the man is called for another audience with the Pope to receive the answer to his question. He stands before the Pope, who says, "My son, I have some good news and some bad news in relation to your question. The good news is that heaven has the most fabulous golf course that you could imagine and is in eternally perfect shape."

"And what's the bad news?" asks the man.

"You tee-off tomorrow morning," the Pope replies.

I AM

Signs You're the Reincarnation of Someone Famous...

-During a thunderstorm, you build a giant boat and start stealing your neighbor's pets.

-When the boss criticizes your work, you hack off your right ear and mail it to him.

-Not only do you consider Yoko an artistic genius, you think she's beautiful and has a lovely singing voice.

-While working under the sink, you get this insatiable urge to paint a church ceiling.

-Out of luck winos are bringing you jugs of water.

-You're found writing down rules of the office on giant stone tablets.

January 2011 Phil Hansen News Letter

Well, we're in another new year here in the VZ Valley.  We hope you had a great Christmas and holiday season and wish you the best in 2011.

2010 was an eventful year in the valley with the founding of the acoustic Music trio Acoustic Couti in August.  Acoustic Couti is made up of Phil Hansen, Bret Holtz, and John Dimazio (and occasionally Jeff Griffith).  Adding them ton Phil Hansen's solo work and Bret and Phil playing with Gypsy Joe (aka The A Team) we had over 120 performances this year including the King County Fair in Enumclaw, the Art Walk, and several other festivals, fairs, restaurants, and coffee shops.  Our goal in 2011 is to expand to playing on occasional Fridays as we have picked up a few new semi-regular venues playing in wine shops here on the plateau.  We are always searching for new venues, if you have or know of one give us a shout at Cassmusic@att.net.  We hope to see you throughout the coming year.

So where are Acoustic Couti playing this month?

This weekend Jan 8 & 9 Phil and Bret are with the contemporary Gospel band Gypsy Joe at the Summit EFC on Highway 410 in Enumclaw.  Saturday night from 7:00-8:30 and twice on Sunday morning 8:45 -10:00 and again from 11:15-12:30.

Acoustic Couti is scheduled for 2 shows on Saturday Jan 15.  they will be playing at the Kent Bluegrass Jam from 2-3 at the Senior Citizens Center at the bottom of Smith Hill.  Then they hightail it up the hill to Covington to play at Cutters Point from 5-7.  Cutters is a fine coffee house located just East of Highway 18 in front of Fred Meyer in Covington.

Sunday the 16th has Phil Hansen solo from 1-3 at the Mandolin Cafe in Tacoma.  The Mandolin has new owners with an up-scaled food and beverage menu.  They are located at the intersection of 12th and Proctor just east of Highway 16.

Acoustic Couti's  first Friday this year is at Sip City Wines in Enumclaw from 6-8 on January 21.  Sip City is a fine wine shop located at the intersection on Cole and Griffin in Enumclaw.  The owner, Steve, is looking towards regular performances in his shop and we are honored to be the first.

Saturday January 22 has Acoustic Couti at Main Street Coffee  from 6-8 on (guess where) the first intersection on Main Street in Buckley.

Sunday January 23 has Phil Hansen solo back at Cutters Point in Covington from 2-4.

Saturday and Sunday Jan 29 & 30 has Phil and Bret once again playing with Gypsy Joe at the Summit on Highway 410 in Enumclaw.  Saturday from 7-9:30 and Sunday 8:45-10:00 and 11:15-12:30.

Good fortune in the coming year.  We hope to see you soon;

Phil  & Deb, Bret, John, Jeff

Parkinson's Post Available Online

Dear Scott D.,

Our weekly update is designed to keep the Parkinson's community up to date on all the latest science and discoveries that cross our desk each week. Our website carries the full range of articles received this week and in the past.

Please visit us at www.nwpf.org for:

  • Michael J. Fox on Parkinson's and life
  • (CNN) -- When I went to Michael J. Fox's neighborhood this morning, I had no idea what time we would start our interview. "He has to time his medications," I was told. "When his medications kick in, he will be ready." As far as I could tell, Fox's medications kicked in right away, and for the next 90 minutes, we talked about everything.

Fox spoke about the hard shoes he has to wear first thing in the morning, because his feet and legs are so stiff. He humorously added that he just puts his toothbrush in his mouth and lets the movement of his head do the rest of the work. As a neurosurgeon, it was fascinating to hear Fox describe his brain surgery with such great clarity and his fears about doing it again. "Well, it is brain surgery...," he said with flourish.

There is a lot we don't know about Parkinson's disease. For starters, no one is sure what causes it. One's genetics likely loads the gun, and something in the environment pulls the trigger. But what?

  • Mike Dennis, a positive spirit / Former pediatrician still going strong despite Parkinson's disease
  • Dr. Mike Dennis walks with a pronounced gait and his hands shake as he struggles with his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease. But the 62-year-old hasn't let that slow him down one bit.

Dennis has devoted the majority of his professional life to children and it shows in the way his eyes light up when he speaks of them, whether it's one of his former patients or his own children. He worked as a pediatrician at Hendersonville Pediatrics for many years before opening Rainbow Pediatrics with a partner in 2001.

Dennis said he was "lucky" that he knew what he wanted to do with his life from an early age.

"I was changing my sister's diapers when I was 5 years old, and that's when I knew that I wanted to be a doctor and work with children," he said.

  • Ten Dietary Rules to Help Manage Parkinson's Disease That Can Revitalize Anyone's Life
  • As a sufferer of Parkinson's disease and a physician/medical writer, the combination of all my research on the disease and my direct life experience with it yielded these rules.

I narrowed a larger set of recommendations down to 10 rules for my diet to best insure a high antioxidant healthy balance that controls my weight and still provides adequate protein.

Following the 10 rules 90 percent of the time is not as difficult to follow nor as expensive as it looks. Try it whether you have Parkinson's or not. I am willing to bet that no matter who you are, you will feel more vitality, have better concentration during the day, and sleep better at night.

  • Two hours of 'Me' time keeps me sane / Zainab Baker, who cares for her Parkinson's-stricken husband, talks about how it changed her life
  • It's 5 pm. Architect Fakhruddin Baker sits with his wife Zainab on the porch of a building he designed in Byculla, enjoying the evening breeze.

But the 73-year-old doesn't remember designing the building. Baker suffers from Parkinson's disease, a degenerative condition of the nervous system characterised by impairment of motor skills, bodily movements and cognitive ability.

He turns to mumble a few words in his wife's direction. Zainab understands them instantly and rushes indoors to get a warm pullover.

  • For Many with Parkinson's, treatment offers relief
  • Marian Zitzelsberger once dreamed of retiring and pursuing her love of gardening and photography, but she couldn't even hold a camera steady because of tremors in her hand caused by Parkinson's disease.

Today, thanks to a surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation, this spunky 72-year-old Staatsburg resident no longer suffers from tremors and is looking forward to pursuing her hobbies and enjoying life with her husband, Paul Zitzelsberger.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure developed in the 1990s to treat a variety of disabling neurological symptoms, but most commonly those from Parkinson's disease, such as tremor, rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement and walking problems.

  • Empowerment Through Adventure
  • The Northwest Parkinson's Foundation presents "Empowerment Throudh Adventure' for People with Parkinson's and MS

Please join us for a motivational seminar for everyone about Empowerment Through Adventure.
