Christmas Day

Christmas Day

this day the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-Son, help round out the scene.

But if we were to select a patron for today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery.

On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “un-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And, like Mary and the shepherds, let us treasure that discovery in our hearts.

Mornings

Two Kinds of People

There are two kinds of people. Those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord," and those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good Lord, it's morning."

ONES

Church Bulletin Bloopers: Peace and Pancakes

Our youth basketball team is back in action Wednesday at 8 PM in the recreation hall. Come out and watch us kill Christ the King.

Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands.

The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been cancelled due to a conflict.

The Lutheran men's group will meet at 6 pm. Steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread, and dessert will be served for a nominal feel.

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done.

This afternoon, there will be a meeting in the south and north ends of the church. Children will be baptized at both ends.

Tuesday at 4:00 pm there will be an ice cream social. All ladies giving milk will please come early.

Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Methodist. Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.

Due to weather conditions, there will not be any “Women Worth Watching” this week.

The church is glad to have with us today as our guest minister the Rev. Shirley Green, who has Mrs. Green with him. After the service, we request that all remain in the sanctuary for the Hanging of the Greens.

Don't miss this Saturday's exhibit by Christian Martian Arts.

God is Watching

Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, "Take only one, God is watching."

At the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. Moving through the line a boy wrote another note to leave by the cookies, "Take all you want, God is watching the apples."

DO RE

Dough Robbery

Did you see the recent story in the Jewish Chronicle about the theft of egg-enriched dough from a north London warehouse?

Unfortunately, the theft happened just before Shabbos and it forced many local bakeries to bake their challas with plain, white flour. A leading rabbi was quoted as saying, "I’m appalled by the rise in white challa crimes."

CLOCK SPEED

Clocks in Heaven

A man died and arrived at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter greets him and says, "Welcome. Come walk with me and I'll show you where you'll be staying."

As they're walking along the path he notices clocks on the Golden Fence of Heaven. He asks St. Peter, "What are all those clocks for?"

St. Peter replies, "They’re clocks for every person in the world. They click once for each time you lie."

By the time they reach where the man is staying, he asks out of curiosity, "I didn't see any politicians’ clocks. Where are they kept?"

St. Peter calmly replies, "People here use them as fans."

Rest

In the Beginning…

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and then He rested.

Then God created man, and then they both rested.

Then God created woman, and since then neither God nor man has ever rested.

Belief

Heaven and Hell

A young woman came home and told her mom that her steady boyfriend had proposed, but she had turned him down because she found out he was an atheist, and didn't believe in Heaven or Hell. "Marry him anyway, honey. Between the two of us, we'll show him just how very wrong he is."

All the news fit

A Publicist for Moses

Moses: “How are we going to get across the sea? The Egyptians are close behind us!”

General of the army: “Normally, I’d recommend that we build our own bridge to carry us across. But there’s not enough time for that.”

Admiral of the navy: “Normally, I’d recommend that we build barges to carry us across. But time is too short.”

Public relations officer: “I don’t have a solution, but I can promise you this: If you can find a way out of here, I’ll get you two or three pages in the Old Testament!”

Internet

The True Origin of the Internet

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called 'Amazon Dot Com.'

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young man did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others."

And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known "eBay" he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."

"YAHOO," said Abraham.

And that is how it all began. It wasn't Al Gore after all.

::lady danville tour with dashboard confessional:: Photobucket
In January of 2011, we will kick off the New Year by joining Dashboard Confessional for the Swiss Army Romance 10th Anniversary Tour!
Check out the dates and cities below, and for you out-of-towners, remember the old Chinese Proverb: "A West Coast roadtrip to see good music in January is good for your heart." So for all you Midwest and East Coasters, roadtrip out to a show... do it for your heart.

Tickets are selling out very quickly, so get 'em now!

::tour with ben folds a success::

The Lonely Avenue Tour with Ben Folds proved to be even more amazing than we could have imagined. Every night, we played in beautiful theatres, packed to the brim with loyal Ben Folds fans (whom we subjected to our music before they were allowed to see the main event). The audiences were incredible. Thank you to everyone who came out: for those long-time fans who road-tripped out to see us, and for those brand-new fans who we met for the first time when we stepped onto the stage.
Ben Folds and his band are fantastic guys and (obviously) inspiring musicians. Every night after we played, we snuck up into the balcony-seats and watched their set with adoring eyes, singing along. We are so grateful to have shared the road (and stage) with them.
We still have one more show coming up (12/14 in NYC @ the Beacon Theatre, tickets here), so we'll wait to share more pics and details from the tour until next issue. Stay tuned, folks.

::rockdrive 2010 benefit show this weekend in LA::

We are proud to join the incredible lineup for this Saturday's (12/11 @ 7pm, all ages) "ROCKDRIVE 2010", a music benefit geared toward raising funds to support public education in Los Angeles.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit Communities In Schools (CIS), the largest dropout prevention organization in the United States endorsed by Nelson Mandela and Michelle Obama, and The Story Project, a local inner city literacy program that teaches through film, poetry, and music.
Come join for a night of incredible music for an incredible cause!

::new lady danville merch for the holidays::
Photobucket
Right before we left on the Ben Folds Tour, we made an exclusive lady danville tour sampler, only to be sold on the road. Because we're feeling extra holiday-spirity, we decided to sell the hard copy on our merch site for a limited time only (tracks also available for purchase on our myspace). Also on the merch site, check out our brand new hoodies (to keep out the cold) and fresh t-shirts (if you live in LA and don't know what "cold" is).
